Hotel España in Lima, Peru could never be accused of being lacking in character. The classic old building is chock-full of porcelain busts, old oil paintings in gilded frames, and even has a display case of excavated skulls in reception. It’s the oldest backpacker’s hotel in Lima, and it wears the “slightly-worn-at-the-edges” look well. Climbing the creaky spiral staircases to the third and fourth floors, you can’t help but feel like you might have stepped into a haunted mansion. But it’s the uniqueness of the crystal chandeliers, peacocks on the rooftop, and all the creepy artwork that makes Hotel España such a memorable experience.
Hotel España offers dormitories, single, double, triples, and quadruple rooms, all at a good rate for central Lima. Breakfast is also available in the rooftop cafe for 6 Soles. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with TVs, fans, and hot water. Being a long-established backpackers’ crash-pad ensures a fun crowd of new friends, and being only blocks away from the Plaza de Armas allows easy walking access to all of central Lima’s sights. The Metropolitano bus station, where you can catch a ride to other Lima neighborhoods, is also only a short walk away.
